Surfboard Art
Custom surfboard art made from upcycled boards, designed around your story.
Each of these pieces begins life as a retired surfboard, upcycled and hand-painted, or printed, into a vibrant canvas that tells its own story of the sea. Whether it's your favourite surf spot, an unforgettable wave, or the feel of Cornwall's coastline, I create pieces that reflect your personal connection to the ocean.
Every board is carefully sourced to keep the process sustainable and built to last - or, if you'd rather, you're welcome to send me one of your own cherished boards to work on. From there, it's a collaboration: your stories and inspiration shape the design, so what you end up with isn't just art, but a piece of your own journey with the sea.

Available Surfboard Artworks
Each surfboard artwork is created in limited numbers, with many pieces made as one-off works.
Some begin life as retired surfboards, reimagined in my studio through layers of pigment, reclaimed textiles and sculptural texture. Others are created through a specialist process where one of my artworks is printed onto fibreglass and reglassed onto a board, producing a sleek, glassy finish.
Because of the scale and craftsmanship involved, only a small number of surfboard pieces are created each year.
Below are the boards currently available.
This surf art piece is a repurposed surfboard, retired from riding waves in the ocean, now transformed into a unique piece of textured wall art.
This piece is a collaborative project between myself, fine art printer The Logical Choice Group, and surfboard shaper Rochfort Customs — three Cornwall-based businesses coming together to help reduce waste and protect our oceans.
Once destined for landfill, this retired surfboard has had all damage repaired by Rochfort Customs. I then work with The Logical Choice Group to print one of my unique surf art pieces onto fibreglass, which is re-glassed onto the surfboard "canvas" by Rochfort Customs. This board is a print from my original painting "Surfs Up at Fistral," focusing on one of my favourite wave-watching spots in Cornwall, Fistral Beach.
This board was originally shaped in 1997 by now world-famous big wave surfer Andrew Cotton.
As well as my standard donation to Surfers Against Sewage with every sale, an additional donation is made to the charity Wave Project from the final sale of this board.
This piece comes with hanging loops on the back to hang horizontally or vertically, or it can be displayed on a surfboard stand.

This surf art piece is a repurposed surfboard, retired from riding waves in the ocean, now transformed into a unique piece of textured wall art.
Once destined for landfill, this surfboard has been rescued and upcycled as a canvas for one of Gemma's textured art paintings. This piece was painted live up ontop of the cliffs above Fistral beach, as part of the Rising Tide Eco Surf Industry Festival in August 2024. It is literally infused with the sun, sand and wind from the 4 day event, capturing the conditions of the surf competition that was held during the event.
The texture has been built up very subtly in this painting, using fibreglass offcuts from a surfboard shaper in Newquay, creating soft breaking peaks in the sets rolling in towards the sandy shoreline. The sand you can see on the shore is a light sprinkling of sand from Fistral beach, again infusing it with the magic of this world famous surf spot.
As well as Gemma’s standard donation to charity Surfers Against Sewage, which she makes with every sale, an addition donation is made to the charity Wave Project from the final sale of the board.
This piece can hang horizontally or vertically on a wall using specific board hangers (I can send some recommendations). Or it can be displayed on a floor based surfboard stand.

This surf art piece is a repurposed surfboard, retired from riding waves in the ocean and now transformed into a unique piece of textured wall art.
Once destined for landfill, this surfboard has been rescued and upcycled as a canvas — a material that carries the history of the sea within it before a single brushstroke has been applied.
The texture has been built up very subtly in this painting, using fibreglass offcuts from a surfboard shaper in Newquay, creating soft breaking peaks in the sets rolling in towards the sandy shoreline. The sand you can see on the shore is a light sprinkling taken from Fistral beach itself — infusing the piece with the spirit of this world-famous surf spot in a way no print ever could.
This piece hangs horizontally on a wall and includes hanging fixtures on the back, ready to hang straight away.

The Commissioned Board Process
There are two ways in which I offer my surfboard art. First is a hand painted textured piece, which gives you the 3 dimensional texture I uniquely capture with repurposed materials. I will discuss with you the location you want to focus on, colour scheme, overall composition and then paint directly onto the surfboard, using upcycled fabric, surfboard fibreglass and other beach found materials to build the texture of the waves and shoreline.
Or alternatively you can choose a smooth, glossy finished board which uses one of my previous painting designs. Any print in my available print store can be chosen for this, even just zooming in on one part of a print. These prints show all the texture of the original painting, the piece being scanned by a v3d high resolution scanner, so you get the beauty of the texture but with a smooth, gloss finish. This is then printed onto lightweight fibreglass and then glassed/resined on top of the old surfboard, using my trusted surfboard shaper in Newquay.
With all my surfboard art pieces, I leave the back of the board as it has always been, allowing the board to tell it story; from the shaper who originally crafted it, to stickers from sponsers or journeys travelled.
Pricing & Availability
Commissioned surfboards are all bespoke prices, as it will depend on whether I am sourcing a board or you are supplying, the dimensions of the board etc.
However as an example cost:
A hand painted, textured surfboard (a board averaging 180cm in length), with the board sourced by me, prices start from £3,000.
A re-glassed gloss finished surfboard using a design from my print catalogue, with the board sourced by me, prices start from £3500.
You may ask why the gloss finished boards are a slightly higher price, this is due to the costs involved with printing onto new fibreglass and Gemma’s shaper glassing the new artwork onto the board.
I only take on a limited number of commissions per season to preserve creative focus.
Lead times are currently 8–12 weeks — please enquire early if you have a specific date in mind.

"Gemma's surfboard art captured the essence of my favourite surf spot. It's more than just a piece of art; it's a piece of my journey."
Things to Note
If you are supplying a board for me to use, some minor damage can be repaired, eg. slight damage to the nose or tail, dings down the rails, but this will all be factored into the cost as my shaper will need to repair this damage. Boards which are snapped in two unfortunately cannot be used, unless you want just half a board as the piece!
All boards are designed to be wall art pieces - boards can come with hanging fixtures on the back, or I can recommend fixtures for the wall or floor that the board can sit in to be admired vertically or horizonally.
If you would like to discuss creating a RIDEABLE / SURFABLE board, this can be arranged. The board can be supplied by yourself or I can work with my shaper in Newquay to build you a complete custom board. I can then either hand paint a FLAT design (no texture) onto the board or use one of my prints to adorn the top of the board. This is a fully bespoke project which entails additional costs so please contact me for a bespoke quote.
