Press Bio

Gemma Lessinger is a contemporary artist rooted in the ocean, transforming reclaimed textiles and surf materials into fluid forms that explore the contrast between human construction and natural flow.

From a two-decade career in fashion retail buying, Gemma directly witnessed the environmental impact of large-scale clothing production. Today, she reclaims discarded textiles - denim, vintage linens, ghost nets and surfboard fibreglass - embedding them into paint to create sculptural surfaces that behave like water.

Her practice explores what we choose to preserve and what we discard - and how even materials tied to consumption can be reimagined into objects of permanence and reflection.

Alongside private and commercial commissions, she collaborates with hotels, designers and cultural institutions to create site-responsive works that bring the quiet power of the ocean into interior spaces.

Why the Work Matters

  • Gemma’s work bridges sustainability and concept-led practice.

  • She reclaims textiles and found materials - denim, linens, surfboard fibreglass, ghost nets - embedding them into paint to create sculptural surfaces with memory and motion.

  • Her approach positions material history at the centre of visual storytelling.

  • Her practice aligns with contemporary conversations on consumption, transformation and presence.
