Once destined for landfill, this surfboard has been rescued and upcycled as a canvas — a material that carries the history of the sea within it before a single brushstroke has been applied.
The texture has been built up very subtly in this painting, using fibreglass offcuts from a surfboard shaper in Newquay, creating soft breaking peaks in the sets rolling in towards the sandy shoreline. The sand you can see on the shore is a light sprinkling taken from Fistral beach itself — infusing the piece with the spirit of this world-famous surf spot in a way no print ever could.
