‘Where the Path Once Led – Porthcurno’ Original Textured Painting

£2,000.00

“Where the Path Once Led” captures Porthcurno on Cornwall’s far south-west coast as the tide drops: deep turquoise water, a gentle wave lapping onto golden sand, and the dark rocks on the left of the beach emerging as the sea draws back.

This painting comes from a day I spent at Porthcurno with my husband, just after access to Pedn Vounder had been closed. As the tide fell, the water pulled back from the rocks on the left of the beach, and you could see the old way round to that hidden cove, a route so many people have walked before. This piece is a quiet homage to that path, and to the places we hold onto even when we can’t reach them any more.

The water is layered with the same vintage tablecloth that runs through my Swim Notes trio, its scalloped, lacy pattern showing through the turquoise like sunlight rippling across the seabed. The rocks and the gentle lapping wave are made from rope I found washed up on the beach, cut up and mixed into the paint, so a little of Porthcurno itself is held in the painting. The golden sand is made from hessian sack, its rough weave giving the beach a natural, sun-warmed texture.
