‘Watergate Sunset’ Original Textured Painting

£250.00

“Watergate Sunset” captures Watergate Bay at the deepest point of the evening, when the sky turns crimson and a long wave rolls in across the bay, spraying white against the glow.

Watergate’s two miles of sand face straight out to the west, so on a clear evening the whole bay becomes a stage for the sunset. The colour is at its richest just before the sun dips below the horizon: deep reds and flecks of gold spill across the sky and onto the water, while the sea beneath darkens to midnight blue. This small piece holds that last, most intense moment of light.

The crimson and gold sky is made from an old silk dress, its folds and creases catching the light. The darkening ocean is cut from a pair of vintage Levi’s jeans, flecked with gold and sunset tones, and the breaking wave is sculpted from surfboard fibreglass offcuts, so the white water stands proud between sky and sea.

Watergate Sunset is one of three small sunset pieces along the north Cornish coast, alongside Crantock Sunset and Fistral Sunset. Each is an original in its own right, and together they make a glowing set. For Watergate Bay by day, see Washed in Gold.
