‘Swim Notes III – Crantock’ Original Textured Painting
“Swim Notes III” is the last of three small paintings made from beneath the surface at Crantock Beach, the moment the water settles and you rise back up towards the light.
Every swim at Crantock ends the same way: that slow return to the surface, the water softening around you and the sunlight growing brighter overhead. In this final piece, the threads curve gently upwards in long, rippling lines, like the ribbons of light you see just before you break the surface, with gold catching along their edges.
The rippling lines are made from offcuts of Egyptian cotton thread, given to me by fellow artist Elle Collins, who creates woven textile wall art. Here they’re laid in soft, parallel curves, frayed edges and all, so the water seems to flow upwards across the canvas. A layer of vintage tablecloth gives the deeper water its dappled, netted texture, and gold acrylic traces the ripples where the light reaches down from above.
Swim Notes III is part of a trio. Each piece is an original in its own right, and together they read as a sequence of moments from one swim: diving in, being carried by the current and rising back to the light. See Swim Notes I and Swim Notes II. For Crantock above the water, see Crantock Sunset.
