‘Swim Notes II – Crantock’ Original Textured Painting

£250.00

“Swim Notes II” is the second of three small paintings made from beneath the surface at Crantock Beach, this time caught in the pull of the water as it rushes past in one strong, sweeping current.

Swimming at Crantock, there are moments when the sea takes over: a wave passes overhead, or the water rushes past and everything streams in one direction. In this second piece, the threads gather into a single flowing current running across the corner of the canvas, with streaks of gold flashing through it like sunlight caught in moving water.

The current is made from offcuts of Egyptian cotton thread, given to me by fellow artist Elle Collins, who creates woven textile wall art. Here they’re gathered and layered thickly, frayed ends and all, so the water seems to surge off the surface. A layer of vintage tablecloth gives the deeper water its dappled, netted texture, and gold acrylic streaks through the current where the light breaks in.

Swim Notes II is part of a trio. Each piece is an original in its own right, and together they read as a sequence of moments from one swim. See Swim Notes I and Swim Notes III. For Crantock above the water, see Crantock Sunset.
