‘Swim Notes I – Crantock’ Original Textured Painting

£250.00

“Swim Notes I” is the first of three small paintings made from beneath the surface at Crantock Beach, the view you see with your face in the water, the light breaking into strands and gold flecks through the turquoise.

Crantock is my regular sea swim spot, and these three pieces are like notes from those swims: the moments I come back to long after I’ve dried off. In this first piece, fine threads of light fan out through the water like fronds of seaweed swaying in the current, catching gold where the sun reaches down from the surface.

The fanning strands are made from offcuts of Egyptian cotton thread, given to me by fellow artist Elle Collins, who creates woven textile wall art. Twisted and worked into the paint, they rise off the surface like fronds moving in the current. A layer of vintage tablecloth gives the water its rippling, dappled texture, like sunlight patterns on the seabed, and gold acrylic traces the edges of the strands where the light catches.

Swim Notes I is part of a trio. Each piece is an original in its own right, and together they read as a sequence of moments from one swim. See Swim Notes II and Swim Notes III. For Crantock above the water, see Crantock Sunset.
