“One Stop from St Ives” captures the left side of Carbis Bay, where clear turquoise water ebbs and flows gently over golden sand beside the rocks.
Carbis Bay is one of my favourite places to swim. On my Porthmeor weekends at the St Ives School of Painting, I’d hop off the train here on the way home for a dip, salt water washing off a day of paint and ideas. The left side of the bay was always my spot: sheltered, calm and clear, with the water lapping softly against the rocks.
The water is made from an old silk top, its folds and sheen capturing the gentle movement of the bay as the tide ebbs and flows. The rocks and the soft lapping wave are made from rope I found washed up on the beach, cut up and worked into the paint. The sand is painted in acrylic with a sprinkling of sand from Carbis Bay itself scattered over the surface.
Carbis Bay sits just along the coast from Porthmeor, where this collection began. See Woven in the Waves I and Woven in the Waves II, the same size and a natural trio with this piece.
