‘Woven in the Waves I – Porthmeor, St Ives’ Original Textured Painting
“Woven in the Waves I” captures Porthmeor Beach in St Ives, where clear turquoise water rolls in over fine golden sand, looking down on the moment a wave spreads across the shore.
Porthmeor is where this collection began. The St Ives School of Painting looks out over the beach, and during my time there I’d watch the waves between sessions, the light changing on the water through every hour of the day. It was there that I started experimenting with fabric, letting pieces of material tell stories of place and memory, and Porthmeor became the first chapter of Pieces & Place.
The water is woven from a vintage lace tablecloth handed down to me from my grandmother, its patterns showing through the turquoise like light on the seabed. The shoreline is built from acrylic paint and a sprinkling of sand from Porthmeor, and the white water is sculpted from [material], so the wave stands out from the surface and catches the light.
Woven in the Waves I is one of a mirrored pair. Each painting is an original in its own right, and hung side by side they read as two views of the same shoreline. See Woven in the Waves II.
Acrylic and reclaimed, upcycled materials on 36cm x 46cm wood board
Framed in a handmade white shadow tray frame, crafted in Newquay
