“Another World Away” captures Lusty Glaze in Newquay, the sheltered cove where turquoise water rolls in onto golden sand and the dark rocks run down to meet the waves.
Step down onto Lusty Glaze and it feels like being transported to another country: clear water, sheltered sand and cliffs that close out the rest of the world. It’s also the beach I’m most often commissioned to paint for wedding couples, and every time I see this rock formation I’m filled with joy, remembering the love and excitement of the special days I’ve been part of here. A large collection of my work is on display at the bay too, so it holds a very special place in my heart.
The water is made from sand from the beach mixed into the paint, giving the sea its glittering, textured surface. The breaking wave is made from rope I found washed up on the beach, cut up and mixed into the acrylic, and the rocks are built from more of that rope with Lusty Glaze sand worked through it. The sandy shore is made from hessian sack, its weave catching the light like sun-warmed sand.
