‘A Delicate Thread – Mawgan Porth’ Original Textured Painting
“A Delicate Thread” captures the left side of Mawgan Porth on Cornwall’s north coast, my favourite view of the bay, where the sea gradually flows in to meet the river, washing over the sand beside the dark rocks.
Mawgan Porth is one of the beaches I’m most often commissioned to paint, and it holds a special place in my heart because of the memories I’ve made here with my family. Those memories, like the beach itself, feel precious and fragile, and this painting is about holding onto them.
The water is made from surfboard fibreglass, with its threads left clearly visible to represent the pieces of a memory, and how delicate and fragile both life and our oceans are. The rocks and the wave are made from sand from the beach and rope I found washed up on the shore, cut up and worked into the paint. The sandy shore is made from hessian sack, and I’ve purposely left a single pulled thread visible in the weave, a small reminder of the delicate nature of life and of our beaches.
