‘Woven in the Waves II – Porthmeor, St Ives’ Original Textured Painting
“Woven in the Waves II” returns to Porthmeor Beach in St Ives, this time with the wave sweeping in from the other side, washing up across the golden sand towards the left of the frame.
Painted as the mirror of Woven in the Waves I, it holds the other half of my memories of Porthmeor. Between sessions at the St Ives School of Painting, which overlooks the beach, I’d watch the swell roll in and the water change from deep teal to bright turquoise as it reached the shallows. Those days at Porthmeor were when I first began letting fabric tell the story, and they set the direction for this whole collection.
Like its pair, the sea is made from lace cut from an old tablecloth my grandmother gave me. Here its scalloped edges and stitched borders run right through the water, as if the pattern is being pulled along by the tide. Surfboard fibreglass offcuts form the breaking white water, lifting it off the surface, and the sand is painted in acrylic with a few grains from Porthmeor scattered over the top.
Woven in the Waves II can be bought on its own, or hung beside Woven in the Waves I as a mirrored pair, two views of one shoreline, each wave rolling towards the other.
Acrylic and reclaimed, upcycled materials on 36cm x 46cm wood board
Framed in a handmade white shadow tray frame, crafted in Newquay
