‘Washed in Gold – Watergate Bay’ Original Textured Painting

£750.00

“Washed in Gold” captures Watergate Bay on Cornwall’s north coast, where a wave rolls in from deep teal water and spreads across sand lit gold by the low sun.

On one of my walks along Watergate’s long stretch of beach, I came across a sand artist’s work: a beautiful pattern raked into the sand at low tide, waiting for the sea to take it back. It stayed with me long after I’d left the beach, and when I found an old lace doily in my studio, its circles brought that moment straight back.

The doily is pressed into the sand of this painting, its rings echoing the pattern I found that day, with gold leaf worked through it to catch the light like the sun on wet sand. The breaking wave is sculpted from surfboard fibreglass offcuts, so the white water rises off the surface and seems to be rushing forward over the pattern, just as the tide would.
