This piece, "Porthmeor Shoreline," captures the momentum of the swell rolling in at Porthmeor Beach, one of the best surf spots in the St Ives area. Focusing on the right side of the beach, with the rocky cliffs just in view, the texture in these rocks has been built up using sand and plastic found washed up on the shoreline. The shoreline on the left of the piece is made from sand from the beach, giving a beautiful textured, almost shimmering sand effect.
As with all of this collection, the white water detail has been built up using offcuts of fibreglass — a by-product of surfboard manufacturing, given to me by Newquay-based surfboard shaper Rochfort Customs. These offcuts are non-recyclable, so by repurposing them into my art, I'm helping the shaper get one step closer to being zero-waste.
