This painting was captured whilst gazing out at a building swell at Porthleven, famous for its huge breaking waves.
I created this piece as a study of Porthleven, a place I find deeply inspiring, with its contrast of huge breaking swells over the harbour walls and yet still, calm waters within the harbour itself.
In the breaking waves, I've used repurposed fibreglass offcuts from a surfboard shaper in Newquay, sculpting the material into the powerful wave crest.
To signify the two opposing conditions of the location, I wanted to add a contrasting element, something striking yet subtle, a further contradiction. I used a bold neon pink which builds from underneath the 3D texture of the wave, flowing out gently into the turquoise water below.
