“Held by the Rocks” captures the natural sea pool at Treyarnon Bay on Cornwall’s north coast, a pool of turquoise water cradled in the dark rocks while the waves break on the beach beside it.
Twice a day the tide rolls over Treyarnon’s rocks and fills the pool, then draws back and leaves it held there, calm, clear and still. It’s one of the most special swimming spots on this coast: wild sea on one side, sheltered water on the other. This painting holds that moment of pause, when the sea has done its work and left something quiet behind.
The rocks are built from tiny pieces of rope and net I found washed up on the beach, cut fine and worked into the paint so the rock surface has its own rough, weathered texture. The sand is made from hessian sack, and the ocean is layered with fabric and surfboard fibreglass offcuts, with the white water sculpted so it stands out from the surface as the wave rolls in.
Acrylic and reclaimed, upcycled materials on 30cm x 30cm wood board
Framed in a handmade white shadow tray frame, crafted in Newquay
