“Crantock Sunset” captures Crantock Beach at the end of the day, in the moment the sky’s glow spills onto the sea and the surface of the water turns red, pink and gold.
Crantock is my regular sea swim spot, and on the best evenings the sunset doesn’t stay in the sky. It pours across the water, so the waves roll in carrying the colours with them. This small piece holds that fleeting moment, when the light catches the surface and the whole bay seems to glow.
The sunset reflection is made from an old silk dress, its sheen catching the light just as the water does. The deep blue ocean is cut from a pair of vintage Levi’s jeans, the denim weave giving the sea its texture and depth, and the breaking wave is sculpted from surfboard fibreglass offcuts, so the white water rises off the surface between sky and sea.
Acrylic and reclaimed, upcycled materials on 20cm x 20cm canvas
Framed in a handmade white shadow tray frame, crafted in Newquay
