“Breaking Away” captures a wave breaking at Polzeath, one of north Cornwall’s best-loved surf beaches, the white water curling over as it rolls towards the shore.
For ten years I worked in fashion at Ann’s Cottage, just along the coast from here, and Polzeath was where I’d break away from the desk in the middle of a busy day. Half an hour watching the surfers and the swell, then back to work with salt air still in my hair. Daymer Bay next door was where I went for calm; Polzeath was where I went for energy, and this small piece holds that feeling.
The upper water is layered with tea bag paper, its creases and folds catching the light like spray on the surface. The breaking wave is sculpted from surfboard fibreglass offcuts, rising off the canvas, and the deeper water beneath it is made from hessian coffee bean sack, its rough weave giving the sea its depth and movement.
Polzeath’s quieter neighbour features in The In-Between Hours – Daymer Bay, the statement piece of this collection.
