Why Surfboards? The Story Behind My Repurposed Surfboard Art
If you've ever wondered why I choose to paint on surfboards, it all comes down to the beauty of the shape, the rich history they hold, and the deep personal connection I have to the surf world. I had the privilege of spending ten years immersed in the surf industry, and that time shaped much of my artistic vision today.
1. A Beautiful Canvas
The first thing that drew me to surfboards as a medium is simply their shape. It’s one of the most elegant and natural canvases to work with. There’s something timeless about a surfboard, the curves, the contours — they almost demand to be painted on. They’re more than just functional objects; they’re pieces of art in their own right. I see them as ready-made art that’s just waiting for someone to bring out their full potential.
2. Repurposing with Purpose
Did you know that thousands of surfboards are retired from the water every year? These old boards often end up being discarded because they’re not recyclable, and most people simply don’t know what to do with them. I believe in sustainability, and this is where the magic happens: by painting on these retired boards, I’m giving them a second life. Instead of letting them go to waste, I turn them into something new — something that tells a story, evokes memories, and celebrates the surf culture that’s so close to my heart.
3. A Personal Connection to Surf Culture
My love for surfboards isn’t just artistic; it’s personal. I spent a decade working as a fashion buyer for the surf industry, immersing myself in the surf world — attending competitions, designing surf clothing, traveling with surfers, and being part of the culture. Through all those years, I saw the deep connection surfers have with their boards. Every trip, every wave, every dent or ding — those are all part of the board’s history. When I paint on a surfboard, I’m honouring that history, telling a story that’s both personal and universal.
4. Giving Love Back to the Board
The act of painting on a surfboard is more than just creating art. It’s about giving back to an object that has witnessed countless memories. I love bringing new life to these boards, creating something that reflects the love, the passion, and the soul of the surfer. These pieces of art aren't just decorative; they’re a celebration of the journey — both on the water and in life.
