What Is Textured Art?

If you’ve ever looked at a painting and had the urge to reach out and touch it - you’ve already experienced the power of textured art.

But what actually is textured art?

Textured art is a form of painting or mixed media work where the surface is built up to create physical depth - not just visual illusion.

This can be done using materials like:

  • Fabric

  • Sand

  • Paper

  • Plaster

  • Natural fibres

  • Found or reclaimed materials

Instead of being flat, the artwork becomes something sculptural. Something you experience as much as you observe.

Why Texture Matters in Coastal Art

When it comes to seascapes, texture changes everything.

Because the ocean isn’t flat.

It’s layered. Moving. Unpredictable.

By building up the surface using reclaimed textiles and natural elements, textured coastal art can capture:

  • The movement of waves

  • The softness of shoreline foam

  • The depth of water

  • The contrast between stillness and energy

It brings the ocean closer, especially for people who can’t be by it every day.

My work is built using a combination of reclaimed materials and traditional paint.

That includes:

  • Repurposed fabrics (often from clothing)

  • Sand collected from specific locations

  • Textile offcuts

  • Natural fibres

Each piece is layered gradually, allowing the materials to shape the final composition.

It’s less about painting onto a surface…

And more about building something from the ground up.

Why Textured Art Is Growing in Popularity

There’s a shift happening in how people choose art for their homes.

Collectors are increasingly drawn to:

  • Pieces that feel tactile and immersive

  • Work that tells a story through materials

  • Sustainable, conscious art practices

  • Unique, one-of-a-kind finishes

Textured art sits right at the centre of all of that.

Choosing the Right Textured Artwork

If you’re considering investing in textured art, think about:

  • Scale - larger pieces allow texture to fully come to life

  • Light - texture changes depending on how light hits it

  • Placement - hallways, living spaces, and bedrooms all create different experiences

And if you’re unsure - I offer a mockup service to help visualise pieces in your space before committing.
