Gwithian Beach is a stunning open stretch of cliff lined sand that runs between Hayle and Godrevy. Known for being one of Cornwall’s best surf spots I wanted to portray that surf heritage in this piece. Capturing a breaking wave, surfers paddling out and patiently waiting for that perfect set to roll in.
As with all of this collection, the white water detail has been built up using offcuts of fibreglass, a by-product of surfboard manufacturing and given to Gemma by Newquay based surfboard shaper Rochfort Customs. These offcuts are non recyclable so by Gemma re-purposing them into her art, she is helping the shaper be one step closer to being zero waste.
