Why Being an Artist Isn’t About Luck (And What Really Got Me Here)
Someone said to me recently,
“God, you’re so lucky…”
And I smiled - because I know exactly what they meant.
From the outside, it probably does look like luck.
A creative career. A studio by the sea. Days spent painting.
But the truth is… luck has very little to do with it.
I wasn’t born into money. I grew up in Slough, Berkshire - not exactly the place people imagine when they think of artists.
What I was given was a strong work ethic.
I commuted 2.5 hours each way to university, every day.
I spent years building a career, showing up even when I felt out of my depth, putting myself in uncomfortable situations, and learning how to connect with people.
Some decisions paid off.
Some didn’t.
But every single one led me here.
Because today, I don’t just paint seascapes.
I create pieces that hold memory, meaning, and connection.
And I don’t take that lightly - that something I create becomes part of someone’s home, their everyday life.
Especially now, when life feels busy and uncertain, I think we’re all looking for things that ground us.
Something that brings a sense of calm.
Of familiarity.
Of connection.
